New York’s Amish Trail continues to blossom as a tourism destination with the efforts of 35 local business owners.
‘‘Our promotion was begun in the fall of 2007 after an assessment by Destination Development of our area of Western New York and Cattaraugus County and their response to our beautiful, untouched, non commercialized Old Order Amish Community,’’ said a spokesperson. ‘‘A group of volunteers quickly formed to collaborate and move forward.’’
With funding from each individual business owner, the Randolph Area Community Development Corp. and Cattaraugus County Tourism, as well a grant awarded from Explore NY, a map was designed and printed. In the first year over 60,000 of these maps had been distributed.
‘‘Currently our third revision and printing is fresh off the presses. A relationship has been formed with our Old Order Amish Community. The main point we are trying to get across is that this unspoiled section of countryside is well worth a drive just to get ‘lost’ and immerse yourself in to a different culture,’’ said the spokesperson. ‘‘While you will find many wonderful artisan shop and crafts, woodworking, basket and rug making, quilts and more Amish shops, the ‘English’ (as non-Amish are called locally) shops can offer you dining, accommodations, adventures and additional shopping to round out your visit with us.”
A Web site has been developed and the communities of Gowanda, Dayton, South Dayton, Cherry Creek, Leon, Conewango, Cattaraugus, East Otto, Randolph, Little Valley and Salamanca are working together to cross promote each others events and businesses.
This has been a wonderful partnership and is providing local residents as well as tourists the opportunity to discover the hidden treasures located within the Enchanted Mountains of Western New York.
